Billy Crystal did an opening montage like he usually does at the 84th Academy Awards ceremony. In this montage, was Crystal dressed as Sammy Davis, Jr. Now those of us who grew up watching Saturday Night Live in the 80’s remember this impersonation very well. I don’t think we ever considered this offensive. This was nothing more than an homage to a man as many impersonations are, even comedy impersonations. He said nothing offensive. He wasn’t being overly “black” as many of the minstrel performers were when they were in black face. Well, really ALL minstrel performers.
Billy Crystal has always done a great job of hosting the Oscars and one of his signatures is the opening montage. It was funny and entertaining. We are really stretching here to find something by which to be offended. There are plenty of other things in this world for which we need to be offended: poverty, hunger, homelessness, Snooki, corporate greed just to name a few. Save your energies for those things.
